How to Prepare Your Skin for Med Spa Treatments in Houston

Thinking about a trip to Aesthetic Lab for one of our famous med spa treatments here in Houston? We’re here to help you on your mission for the glowing, radiant skin you deserve! To make the most of your experience, I want to take you through the steps to take for the best possible results from your treatment. Let’s get straight into it!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
It’s so basic, but so good for you: drink more water! Easy enough? Start to increase how much water you drink about a week before your appointment. The more hydrated you are, the better your skin’s natural moisture balance will be (super-important in Houston’s unpredictable weather!). Can you imagine the frowns if we don’t have any snow this Christmas?
This is especially true if your treatment is a chemical peel, microneedling, or involves a laser. We recommend between 8 to 10 glasses a day. If water bores you, then don’t forget, you can jazz up plain water with cucumber, lemon, or mint to make it more interesting!
Avoid Staying in the Sun
The Houston sun is intense, so be careful out there, especially if your treatment targets pigmentation. We’re not saying to avoid the sun completely (you’re not a vampire!), but try to avoid direct sunlight for at least two weeks before your appointment.
If you do have to go out in the sun, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours—more if you sweat a lot or go swimming. You can also wear a wide-brimmed hat, consider light, long-sleeved shirts, and seek out shade whenever possible.
Don’t Exfoliate and Don’t Use Retinoids
Take a break from retinoids, exfoliating scrubs, and all products that contain AHAs and BHAs for about a week before your treatment. While these do wonders for your skin, they can also irritate it without you noticing. We want your skin to be in a calm, irritation-free state before, during, and after our procedure.
Don’t forget, you can also bring your skincare products to your consultation and we will give you specific guidance on whether they’re the right product for you or not. Speaking of which…
Schedule a Consultation
For the best results and the best treatments, we always recommend a consultation, since we’ll get to know you, your skin, and your routines. We even explore your medical history. If you’re open with us about your skin issues—including conditions like acne, rosacea, or hyperpigmentation, we can tailor your treatment and provide personalized advice.
You can also ask us all your questions about the treatment process, our aftercare, and your expectations. Get in touch.
Avoid Blood-Thinners
Unless they are medically necessary, stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements a week before your treatment. This can mean swapping the Advil for Tylenol. Vitamin E and fish oil should also be cut out!
This is especially important for procedures like dermal fillers or microneedling. If you’re not sure about whether you should stop a medication or supplement, please consult your physician first and follow their advice.
Get Plenty of Sleep
Sleeping is our body’s “me-time” where it heals and regenerates. If you’re not getting at least 8 hours a night, try to aim for this for a week leading up to your appointment. A well-rested body responds better to treatment.
We know it’s not always easy to fall asleep, so we like taking chamomile tea to help us relax. Try to find a relaxing and calming bedtime routine to help you get quality rest. It’s all for a good cause: your skin will be more responsive to the treatment!
Clean Your Face!
No, we’re not saying your face is dirty! What we are saying is on the day of the treatment, skip your entire skincare regimen. No makeup, moisturizer, or whatever else you usually apply. We like to work with a clean face since we can better assess your skin and provide treatment that way.
If you’re coming in from work and this request isn’t something you can do easily, don’t worry—we have everything you need to help you prep your skin before treatment.
We All Deserve Beautiful Skin
Preparing your skin for a med spa treatment does require a little planning, but hopefully, as you can see, it isn’t complicated. If you can follow these basic steps, you’re doing everything you can to help us to give you the best possible results for your treatment.
At Aesthetic Lab, we love helping people to achieve their skin goals! If you have any questions, we’re always here to answer them and guide you through the process. We’re a phone call away – 832.810.7210
